Employing a parolee

Finding a job is important as it provides a parolee with income, purpose and social and support networks. A parolee is not automatically required to tell an employer of their status as a parolee unless the position specifically requires a criminal history check. However, the Probation and Parole Officer would encourage the parolee to be honest with potential employers as it increases the support systems available to them.

If an employee has advised you that they are on parole you should be aware that while reporting or other conditions may impact upon their availability, the Probation and Parole Officer will take all appropriate steps to minimise disruption. However, employment obligations are not a reasonable excuse for a parolee failing to comply with their parole order.

In some cases you may be contacted by the Probation and Parole Officer to confirm information which has been provided by the parolee.
